Back to All NewsLife In The Fast Lane: A Day In The Life Of An HGV Driver
For most people, their working day starts somewhere between 8 and 9am. For an HGV driver, the day often starts considerably earlier, sometimes before dawn (that’s if you’re not on night shift!)
The allure of the open road is always something that’s appealed to you and cruising down the motorway miles with your favourite tunes for company sounds like your dream come true!
So what does a day in the life of a HGV driver look like? Well, every day is going to look a bit different. But hypothetically, it could go a little bit like this…
0430:
The alarm sounds. You get up. Your hair looks like Jimmy Neutron stuck his fingers in a plug socket. Coffee is consumed.
0500:
You complete your mandatory visual and mechanical safety inspection of the truck. You log your start time. Spotify is activated and John Bon Jovi sings you out into the pre-dawn silence.
0800:
First delivery. Your destination is at the end of a road designed for a bicycle. With careful manoeuvring, curses and another chorus of Living On A Prayer, you make it.
1100:
More deliveries. A fight with the sat-nav where the sat-nav wins.
1300:
Lunch. You’ll soon learn the best service stations and at what time the sausage rolls will still be warm.
1500:
Traffic, roadworks and choice words that we won’t repeat here. Drivers who consider indicators to be optional extras.
1730:
Back to the depot. Unloading and paperwork. Vehicle inspection and reporting any faults. Submitting your daily log. Boots off, tea brewing.
And tomorrow the alarm goes off again!
