Back to All NewsWhy Is Transport Manager Refresher Training So Important?
CPC courses for transport managers are essential for those who want to take the next step in their career and become a manager, but it is vital that those who are already managers and have been for some time take refresher courses.
The reason for this is simple. Those who qualified as managers years ago may have done all the training then and passed with flying colours, but the world does not stand still. CPC requirements change over time and with new rules and regulations, not to mention technological change in the fleet sector, yesterday’s expertise can be obsolete today.
How Have Road Haulage Rules Changed Over Recent Years?
Those who have qualified in the past to be a CPC-accredited transport manager may recall that their training included issues such as:
- Road haulage laws
- Business management
- The paperwork required to take goods out of the UK
- Road haulage safety standards
- General road safety laws
These are the kind of things that will be subject to change over time, which is why refresher training is necessary to keep you up-to-date.
An obvious example of how things have changed in recent years is the departure of the UK from the European Union. This means the Single Market rules that the UK previously traded under with our continental partners have been replaced with a new, post-Brexit trade agreement. The paperwork for exports will now be much more extensive in many cases.
A second example relates to road safety laws, not least as the Highway Code is regularly updated. For example, in 2022, there was an update that included new instructions for HGVs on speed limits, with a notable feature being that these were different in Scotland to those in England and Wales.
This means, for example, that managers whose vehicles are departing from Hull must allow for journey times within England to differ from trips of similar distance to destinations in Scotland.
With these and other changes happening regularly, it is essential to take a refresher course.
